About Dignitary - EP Release Show

Dignitary is a Los Angeles-based darkly romantic post-punk band. Drawing comparison to bands like Echo & the Bunnymen, Pulp, and The Cure, Dignitary employs high-energy reverb alongside crooning vocal harmonies to create hook-filled pop songs…songs about death and witches, failure and the unknown; a healthy obsession with all things supernatural and occult, yet with a dark sense of humor.

Originally a filmmaker while also constantly making music, front man Mike Cuenca never quite managed a consistent lineup or sound he was passionate about. Left with hundreds of demos of his own spread across several hard drives, he swore off playing music to focus on a series of films. Eventually coaxed by an old friend to collaborate on a new track, they began making music together and “Demon, Beside Me” (featured on the debut EP) began coming to life. After a turn of events in 2010, Cuenca found himself with nothing but free time and began writing songs, non-stop.

In 2015, after much shifting and shaping, the band’s lineup finally came together and they reintroduced themselves as Dignitary (previously, Dignitary Loss) with a five-song EP to be released October 30th. The first single, “Destiny’s False Turn” is a fast paced dark and fictional track about murder that has changed drastically from its original raw acoustic demos. With it’s catchy drumbeats, absolutely electrifying guitar, and darkly romantic synths, The Tautology EP goes by so quickly, leaving you in anticipation of a full length album and more from this post-punk group.

"Their initial single, “Demon, Beside Me” is a thematically and sonically apt introduction, echoing Gothic folk that hints at the dark sides explored by the likes of Nick Cave and X. Wear black." - Buzzbands LA
