UPDATE: Stella has extended this through September!
Kali Dining, a Los Angeles supper club headed by chef Kevin Meehan, has recently taken up residence at the Stella in Marina del Rey, and the results are fantastic.
Sticking to his tried and true formula, Chef Meehan offers dinners a five-course meal set at a communal table, for a minimum donation of $65 (most guests offer $90 each, bring your own wine). However, instead of offering Kali Dining at a rotating TBD location, for the month of July Kevin is hosting Kali Dining at the new Stella Apartments in Marina del Rey.
We had a chance to visit Kali Dining this past weekend, and we left wondering how soon we could repeat the incredible experience. Words do not do the meals justice, but what truly blew us away was the attention detail, for example hand-foraged almonds were served with one of the salad courses.
The various courses showcased different ingredients, such as oysters or steak in complex arrangements, but the overall taste was balanced, and light. We felt full after the meal, but not stuffed or bloated.
The Stella, a new rental building in Marina del Rey, proved to be a great location to enjoy the meal. The loft style apartment we were in felt much bigger than normal, fitting in 10 dinner guests without feeling cramped.
We enjoyed the communal table and being able to compare notes with the other guests. Kevin and his assistant Brando are terrific hosts, and we enjoyed being able to take a close look as they did last minute prep for some of the courses.
We were also impressed with the way Kevin was able to substitue different ingredients to meet the needs of guests that were vegetarian or had food allergies.
