CicLAvia, the greatest event on two wheels, is coming to beach this weekend!  Unlike past events that focused on the downtown area of Los Angeles, this year Angelinos will be able to bike from downtown to the beach, while experiencing what it is like to have the road to themselves.  The goal of CicLAvia is raise awareness to what LA could be like with greater access to dedicated bike lanes, but as serious as the message might be – the event is a blast for everyone.  No matter your age or athletic ability, get your bike tuned up and come to this event on Sunday!

Sun, surf, and 15 miles of open road will mark the first CicLAvia of 2013, transforming Venice Boulevard and downtown Los Angeles streets into a car-free, linear park for strolling, biking, playing, and exploring the city from a new perspective.Since it began in 2010, CicLAvia has quickly become Los Angeles County’s most popular public event, consistently attracting more than 100,000 participants. CicLAvia is free of charge and open to everyone, from lifelong Angelenos to first-time visitors from around the globe. Leave the motorized transportation methods behind and claim the streets as your own.

The Route for CicLAvia – To the Sea will be CicLAvia’s longest route to date, spanning more than 15 miles and connecting the city’s historic center at El Pueblo de Los Angeles and the bustling boardwalk of Venice Beach. Several hubs along this expansive route will offer information and services for participants. CicLAvia – To the Sea offers a rich tour of the city’s history, vibrant neighborhoods, and majestic views of the Pacific Ocean. Just follow the map for CicLAvia 2013, or simply follow all the people on bikes with a smile on their face.

Of course all of this effort is going to make you thirsty, especially with the warm LA weather we have been having, but there are a few places in Venice that we recommend checking out for a drink before heading home:

James Beach – How could you not like James Beach?  Great foods and drinks with a low tolerance for attitude is the vibe here, despite many appearances in films such as I Love You Man.

Hotel Erwin – The rooftop bar at Hotel Erwin is a great place to end the day with a cocktail and the view of the Pacific Ocean.

Hal’s – Classic Venice!  Great food, a good bar scene and Jazz on Sundays.

The Other Room – A great bar that usually has a good looking, yet friendly crowd.  Be warned, the line can get long quickly at this popular spot in Venice.

CicLAvia is open to the public and free of charge. Registration is not required and there is no starting or ending point along the route. From 10 am – 3 pm, CicLAvia – To the Sea offers 15 miles of car-free, open streets and participants can join the fun at any point along the route.  More info can be found at http://www.ciclavia.org/events/676/to-the-sea/681/about
