“Life’s Short, Eat cookies,” is both the mantra and feel of newly opened Milk Jar Cookies bakery.

Milk Jar Cookies, which opened in April on the Miracle Mile, serves traditional crowd pleasers with a mix of new flavors.

Run by husband and wife team Courtney and Adam Cowan, Milk Jar Cookies is a lifelong dream in the making. Courtney, the baking force, left her job in TV to pursue her true love: baking.

Baking ever since she was a child, she learned recipes from her mom and has perfected them over time.

“I love all desserts, brownies, pies, cakes, but cookies is the one thing that I have to have and kept coming back to,” Cowan says.

Walking into their storefront in the Miracle Mile is like taking a step out of Los Angeles into your grandmother’s house and indulging in her traditional homemade treats fresh out of the oven.

“I wanted people to come in and feel at home, Cowan says. “Most sweet shops are get in and get out, but I wanted to create a place for people to come in, take a beat, forget the stress and step out of LA for awhile.”

Milk Jar Cookies is exactly that, a sanctuary in the heart of LA’s hustle and bustle. Inside, visitors are treated to a rustic, farmhouse-chic decor and details; milk jar chandeliers, rustic tables and chairs, wildflowers and tons of warm cookies heaped on dainty pastel cake stands.

Customers are encouraged to sit, relax and enjoy with warm cookies and a cold glass of milk or a hot cup of coffee.

“I love to entertain and have people over, so I wanted that to come through in my shop, and I feel like I get to have people in my home everyday,” said Cowan

Cowan’s confections are classic, with an added twist. Traditional flavors make up the bulk of her menu including Chocolate Chip, Cinnamon Sugar and White Chocolate Macadamia.

Spicing up her menu, cookies are also inspired from favorite ice cream flavors as well as family favorites. Milk Jar Cookies’ speciality flavor, Banana Split is a surprise favorite. Made with banana dough, chocolate and butterscotch chips, walnuts and slices of fresh strawberries it’s a sweet, moist and decadent transformation of a classic dessert into cookie form. Other favorite ice cream flavors are also represented on the menu, including Mint Chocolate and Rocky Road.

So what flavors is top on Cowan’s list? Her pick for a one time treat is the Chocolate Caramel Pecan, but for one pick to outlast any other, “has to be the classic Chocolate Chip,” said Cowan.

Outside the bakery, you can find Courtney and Adam trying new hiking trails all over Los Angeles, often walking their mini Australian Shepherd and entertaining family and friends in their home. “I have perfected a great spaghetti sauce over the years,” said Cowan laughing, “and there will always be a dessert.”

Milk Jar Cookies is open Tuesday-Thursday from 11-8, Friday-Saturday from 11am-11pm and on Sundays from 12-5pm.
