Electronic Dance Music, or EDM, has come to define LA nightlife and all of pop culture, for that matter. For the moment, guitars and amps are taking a backseat to DJs and producers armed only with a laptop and a few other pieces of equipment.
With exposure at an all time high for dance music, there is no shortage of EDM offerings at LA nightclubs. Here are a few of our favorite events for up and coming EDM DJs and producers.
Woogie Nights – King King
The DoLab is an LA-based creative collective known to many in Southern California as the architects of the annual Lightning in a Bottle Festival, among a host of other famous events. Recently, the group has staked its claim at the King King, using the club’s large-scale, industrialized space as the venue to throw their monthly dance party, Woogie Nights. The event has been attended by a laundry list of famous DJs and producers, including Jay Tripwire, Pumpkin, Wobs, Android Cartel and more.
Dim Mak Studios
Steve Aoki has long since settled into his title as an iconic DJ who helped pioneer the field of electronic dance music into the mainstream, and his Dim Mak label has had featured work from a number of legendary artists. Dim Mak Studios parties took over the old Cinespace venue after it closed in February of 2011. Aoki has taken full advantage of his equity partnership in the space, renaming it, revamping it and hosting parties with the likes of Holy Ghost, Penguin Prison and more.
Control at Avalon
Avalon Hollywood is an iconic LA club that’s been name checked and photographed for years (it even served as the inspiration for bizarre glam-rocker Micky Avalon). But Control is the Avalon’s creme-de-la-creme, a night that has seen the likes of Carl Cox, Diplo, Simian Mobile Diso, Nero, Crookers and many more. Leader of the new school producer Dillon Francis calls is “the epicenter of electronic music in Los Angeles.”
Low End Theory
Founded in 2006, Low End is still considered to be the cutting edge tastemaker forLA bass music. Alpha Pub label head Daddy Kev is the architect behind the project which has helped launch the careers of EDM stars like the Glitch Mob, Nosaj Thing, Flying Lotus and more.
