As Vin Scully famously says, “It’s time for Dodger Baseball.” With a payroll of $239 million, the expectations are high for the 2013 Dodgers season. The Stan Kasten/Magic Johnson Ownership group—now in year two—has made a number of upgrades to the lineup and Dodger Stadium, setting up an exciting year in for the team.
Pitching
The Dodger’s most notable off-season acquisition is Starting Pitcher Zach Grienke. Coming off a 15 win season with the Royals, Grienke is projected as the Dodgers No. 2 starter behind Cy Young Winner, Clayton Kershaw. Rounding out the rotation is former Red Sox standout Josh Beckett in his first full season with the Dodgers, Korean power pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu, and Dodger veteran Chad Billingsly. Former starters Aaron Harang and Chris Capuano move to the bullpen, along with Ted Lilly. One-time All Star Brandon League is the projected closer.
Offense
The Dodgers offense is stacked with one of the most feared line-ups in the National League. Left fielder Carl Crawford, who battled injuries last season, will likely bat in the No. 2 spot most of the season ahead of MVP runner up, center fielder Matt Kemp. All-Star slugger, first baseman Adrian Gonzales, bats clean-up and five-tool speedster, short stop Hanley Ramirez, will likely bat fifth. Right fielder Andre Eithier is hoping to improve his .222 batting average against left-handed pitchers. Reserve Jerry Hairston or newcomer Skip Shumacher could challenge Eithier for playing time.
Upgrades
Dodger Stadium is getting a little face-lift of its own. Two new HD video boards are installed, one in left and one in right field. These video boards are the first in MLB to feature 10mm 1080p LED displays. Other improvements include a new and improved sound system to minimize echoes and wider concourses for additional walking space and wheel chair locations.
Predictions
If opening day is any indication, pitching will carry this team. Clayton Kershaw threw a gem shutting out the Giants, even hitting a home run. After missing the playoffs last season, the Dodgers must secure a Wild Card spot at the very least to match the lofty pre-season expectations. Granted, winning the division will prove difficult as the World Series Champion San Francisco Giants are clearly the team to beat. Expect bounce back seasons from Gonzales and Ramirez and a pitching staff that can take the Dodgers to the NLCS.
