While the masses head to Vegas for Memorial Day weekend, savvy Angelinos skip the traffic, crowds and overpriced hotel rooms and reap the benefits of LA’s numerous Memorial Day weekend events.
Here, there will be less traffic (because everyone is in Vegas), less crowds (because everyone is in Vegas) and reasonable hotel rates (for LA) for those who decide to make a night out at their rooftop hotel party. Memorial Day in LA has a lot to offer, especially those seeking some nightlife action. No work on Monday means there’s no excuse not to have a good time.
Events we’re looking forward to:
The W
Westwood
It wouldn’t be Memorial Day weekend without a pool party. Pools areas across metro LA will be full of people lying out, but not actually getting in the water (it’s an LA thing). For people looking to rage, there’s the W in Westwood. The May 25 DJ lineup features local favorites Bee’s Knees, Wilks, MisterMike, DIJITAL and Lee Wells. On May 26, Kedd Cook, Troy Kurtz, Dr. Fresh and Shae B work the decks. Presale tickets start at $5, but for those looking to go all out, cabanas, daybeds and patio sets are also available for a heftier price.
Create Nightclub
Hollywood
Create’s holiday weekend lineup starts Thursday with the Bassjackers, the house duo has remixed songs for several huge artists including Rihanna and Moby. Friday night’s headliner is Clockwork, a local DJ poised to blow up, especially after he graces the main stage at Electric Zoo, one of the nation’s biggest EDM festivals, later this summer. On Saturday, it’s the one and only Laidback Luke, one of the top international touring DJs. Closing out the weekend on Sunday is Danny Avila. At 19 years old, he shouldn’t even be allowed in a club, yet he’s played at some of the biggest dance clubs in the world. Tickets for each night start at $20.
Fiesta Hermosa
Hermosa Beach
Hermosa Beach is a city known for partying, and Memorial Day weekend will be no exception. The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce calls the event “the largest arts and crafts fair in Southern California,” with over 300 booths showcasing all kinds of artwork and knick-knacks. Drinks are available all day at the Charity Beer & Wine Garden and 18 different food vendors will keep the crowd full. The musical main stage features tributes to music legends, including Elvis, Bon Jovi and Pink Floyd. Carnival rides and a petting zoo are the perfect way to keep the kids entertained. The fiesta runs from 10am to 6pm May 24-26. However the party doesn’t have to stop, the city is filled with late-night bars and restaurants that will keep the good times going.
Cinespia
Hollywood
Most out-of-towners find the idea of Cinespia a bit weird, but to Angelinos it’s all a part of summer in Hollywood. To answer some frequently asked Cinespia questions: Yes, we do watch movies in a cemetery. No, we do not sit on graves. It’s actually not as creepy as it sounds and makes a great night out for the family or for a romantic date under the stars. The screenings are held on a grassy lawn in the middle of the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, and people are welcome to bring small chairs, blankets, picnics and wine and beer. For the holiday weekend, there will be screenings of Jaws on May 24 and Almost Famous on May 25. A DJ gets the night started when the gates open at 6:30pm followed by the movie at 8:30pm. Tickets start at $14.
Avalon
Hollywood
Avalon is hosing two events, on May 23 and May 25, for people 19 and up. The first night focuses on the harder side of EDM with DJs Noisecontrollers and Wildstylez, and tickets starting at $40. The second night is open format, and could feature anything from house to hip hop to dubstep. Tickets for this event start at $15. There’s also a night for those 21+ with Wolfgang Gartner headlining on May 24. This California native is known for his unique take on electro-house and his eight number one hits on Beatport. Tickets for this night start at $40.
