LA is not generally known for its normalcy (what with its Museum of Death and lacto-fermented hot sauces), but this week’s collection of events and activities is strange even by LA standards. If the city’s endless supply of beach days are becoming monotonous, these events and attractions can shake up the normal routine.
WHAT TO DO IN LA:
La Brea Tar Pits Segway Tour
La Brea Tar Pits is the most historic attraction in LA, dating back 50,000 years to the Pleistocene era. Located in the middle of a popular business district, it’s also a weird and out of the ordinary attraction, drawing crowds to peruse the collection of 231 species of vertebrates, 159 species of plants and 234 species of invertebrates that have been excavated since their discovery. The La Brea Tar Pits Segway Tour gives guests the opportunity to explore ancient remains with a high-tech Segway as their transportation.
Wet Sundays at the W Hotel Westwood
LA’s perpetual sunshine begs for uninhibited spaces to cool off and appreciate the surroundings. During the summer months, the W Hotel in Westwood throws a weekly Wet Sunday pool party, complete with DJs, drinks and daybeds for tanning.
WHAT TO SEE IN LA:
Candylebrity Art Show
Jason Mecier’s mosaic portraiture is right at home on Hollywood’s celebrity-filled streets. While his celebrity portraits are usually made with inedibles like yarn and trash, his newest installation is a touch on the sweeter side. Mecier’s Candylebrity show at SWEET! Hollywood uses Good and Plenty candies, Cadbury crème eggs and Red Vines to create portraits of tinsel town’s biggest players, including Taylor Swift, Pamela Anderson and Christina Aguilera.
June 28: Twenty Wonder
Part comedy show, part art gallery and part concert, Twenty Wonder brings together the city’s unique entertainers into one “carnival of the mind.” The 5th annual Twenty Wonder show at the Doll Factory will feature puppeteer Dennis Aiken, the Cirque Berzerk troupe, beers from Golden Road Brewery, the LA Derby Dolls and many more intriguing acts for a night of LA-quality culture and spectacle.
June 28: Best of Craigslist Live
From personal ads to free dirt for sale, Craigslist is a resource for some of the oddest requests on the Internet. The Best of Craigslist Live at the Hudson Theatre collects the most bizarre ads on Craigslist and brings them to the stage for all to enjoy.
WHERE TO EAT IN LA:
June 25: Women in Wine
Before Women in Wine at Santa Monica’s Casa Del Mar Hotel, food and wine events were largely dominated by male winemakers. This time around, women have the chance to showcase their work in the industry with a grand tasting and reception. Among the winemakers presenting at the event are Kate MacMurray of MacMurray Ranch, Tara Gomez of Kitá Wines and Sara Gott of Joel Gott Winery.
Guelaguetza Restaurant
The World Cup is in full swing this week in Brazil, crowding sports bars with soccer fans. Located off the beaten path, Guelaguetza in Koreatown is a great place to catch a match and dig into a plate of their famous mole.
